Menstruation is too often treated as a niche issue - or reduced to the provision of period products. But people’s experiences of menstruation are shaped by social, economic and structural inequalities. Stigma and shame, inadequate education and healthcare, inaccessible facilities and discrimination can restrict bodily autonomy, wellbeing and equal participation in school, work and public life.

These barriers are often compounded for people already experiencing inequality, including disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, people facing racial injustice and those living in poverty or humanitarian settings. There can be no gender equity without menstrual justice.⁠⁠​
