At the beginning of the project, it was clear that the girls had already been affected by society’s stigmatising perception of menstruation. Many girls cringed at the word ‘period’ and used words such as ‘disgusting’ to describe menstruation. Knowledge regarding the female genitalia and menstruation was also low and desire to engage within the menstrual-related activities was small.
Week on week, the girls gained confidence in using the correct terms for menstruation and female body parts and began to outwardly identify as people who had periods. By the end of the project, the girls actively engaged within conversations and activities focused on menstruation and showed a willingness to engage others within menstrual conversation.
